Storm's Essence¶
Once a crossbow. No longer. The stock still bears the shape of the old weapon, but the thing hums now — warm in the hand, restless, blue light crawling the seams as the charge builds.
Description¶
Kobold hands tore the weapon open and rebuilt it around a storm-battery, copper coils, and a loading cradle sized to take an alchemical bomb the size of a clenched fist. It doesn't look like a bolt-thrower anymore so much as something that used to be one.
How It Was Obtained¶
Hantz spent his downtime with the kobold engineers beneath Hammerfall, and it didn't take long before they started showing him things unprompted — half-finished ideas, salvaged mechanisms, the kind of workshop curiosity that only comes from people who've been tinkering in isolation for five centuries. After the party broke Thor's trial in the flooded chamber and returned the recovered mechanism and Vrakka's amulet to the settlement, six engineers swarmed Hantz's crossbow at once and rebuilt it around a storm-battery and blue water taken straight from the storm the party had just weathered.
What came back wasn't a repair. It was a different weapon wearing the old one's shape.
Powers / Effects¶
- Storm Charge: Fired without a loaded bomb, Storm's Essence discharges its own built-in alchemical stormshot — a caged spark that spits out with a crack like splitting rigging.
- Alchemical Payload: As an Interact action, Hantz can load the weapon with any alchemical bomb. The bomb is consumed and its payload bound into the weapon's next shot — losing the bomb's splash damage but gaining its damage dice and rider effects, all of it driven forward in a single focused line instead of scattered across an area. Less waste. Less scatter. More intent.
Current Bearer¶
Hanzt — carrying Storm's Essence since the kobold engineers rebuilt it during the Pilgrimage of the Eight.
