1.8.2 - Odin¶
You came down here for a rune. You left with six, a handful of dead gods' words, and a path back up into Guild territory.
You descended into Odin's sanctum and found, for the first time on this level, a room the elves had actually finished. Clean stone. No tool marks. No salvage. No kobold repair. The raven puzzle gave way under Gunnar's knowledge of Huginn and Muninn, and the hidden cache opened with it. Four rune-scrolls waited inside. Two yielded their names quickly: Read Omens and Talking Corpse. The other two kept their secrets. When you climbed back out, a gaggle of young kobolds had already gathered at the threshold, peering into the exposed sanctum like children staring into a myth that had just become real. Vress and Skit were there too, watching the room that had stayed closed for five centuries finally answer someone.
Back in the Matriarch's Hall, you stayed. You rested. You explored. The kobolds stopped being a strange people in the dark and became, for a little while, a city with merchants, gossip, tools, and curiosity. Hantz found plenty to interest him, especially among the wares and half-finished ideas of the engineers below. Before you left, Vress showed you the objects recovered from the sealed flower-shrine: an ivory comb carved with interlocking flowers, a sealed glass vial, and three hollow coins marked in old elven script. Hantz's forensics turned the vial into something human-sized again: perfume, or cologne, smelling of flowers and sugarcane. Then memory landed. These coins would never have survived into Guild circulation. And in Richeri, among the Guild's holdings, there was a place called the Hollow Coin.
You took that clue to the smooth stone wall of Freya's sealed shrine and found exactly nothing except confirmation. The flower symbol above. The perfect stone. No seam. No mechanism. No way through from this side. So you turned east and entered the halls you now believed belonged to Thor.
The first room had warnings. The second had old machinery and a portcullis the kobolds had never truly solved. Brawn did what Brawn does: grabbed the broken chain and hauled. For a moment the gate rose. For a moment it looked simple. Then it slammed down again and crushed Gunnar's first attempt to wedge it open. Hantz adapted faster. Metal spike. Sluice gate. Better leverage. Brawn hauled a second time and this time the old mechanism held. Beyond it waited the flooded chamber with its strange magnetic pillars. Gunnar went first again, brave enough to test the center plate with his foot. Nothing. Then he stepped onto it fully.
The water surged.
Remember For Next Time¶
- Odin's sanctum: You claimed the Odin rune and found four rune-scrolls. Two are identified: Read Omens and Talking Corpse.
- Vress's recovered objects: The comb, perfume vial, and hollow coins point toward the Hollow Coin in Richeri as the likely way into Freya's shrine.
- The long rest: You slept in the kobold settlement. The ritual clock moved again.
- Thor's temple: You got through the machinery hall and into the flooded chamber. The room has now begun to answer you.
Where We Are¶
You are standing in Thor's flooded chamber beneath Hammerfall. The water has surged, the room has woken, and whatever waits in the storm is about to rise.
